 Characteristics of Good Teaching

  1. Planned and systematic – Planning in teaching involves careful selection, division and systematic revision of subject matter.
  2. Prepares for life activities- Teaching facilitates holistic development i.e. physical, emotional, cognitive and social development of students which prepares them to actively participate in life activities.
  3. Training the emotions- According to Ryburn, teaching should include training the child’s emotions. Good teaching helps students to beware and manage their emotions through various activities such as drama, singing etc.
  4. Matter of drawing out- Teaching is a means of drawing out the innate potential of the students by engaging them actively in various kinds of activities and experiences. 
  5.  Liberates the learner- Successful teaching liberates and widens the intellectual ability of the students. The ideal of teaching is to liberate the students mind from any fear, he may accidentally feel and develop independence in thought and method of procedure so that he may be able to solve his/her problems independently.
  6. An active process- Teaching emphasis the importance of active participation in learning.
  7.  Stimulating and progressive- Good teaching inspires and stimulates students for independence study, self development, and self advancement.
  8. Giving guidance- Guidance is the one of the core of teaching. The teacher guides the students to the right path. As Burton remarked, “Teaching is the stimulation, guidance, direction, and encouragement of learning.”
  9.  Means of adjustment- Good teaching helps students adjust themselves to their environments effectively and in case of change of environment around them.
  10. Democratic- a good teacher creates a democratic environment in the class where every child is treated equally and is free to put forth their views in front of the teacher and his/her classmates.
  11. Diagnostic and Remedial- The teacher firstly diagnosis the problems and difficulties of students in the classroom and then provides remedy employs effective methods to resolve them.
  12. Creative and recreational- Teachers awakens a desire in the learners to be creative and engages them in activities that are a source of pleasure to them. According to Silverman, “A good teacher is like a doctor who adds creativity and inspiration to basic activity.”


Aims of Teaching

The aims of teaching have a deep relationship with the forms and ideals of the society. According to Crow and Crow, ‘The Education Committee in America’ has determined following general aims of education-

  1. The child should be imparted knowledge in his/her mother tongue or native language.
  2. To develop child’s the ability to communicate (oral and written) with others in his/her mother tongue.  
  3. To help students develop their mental and social skills and abilities.
  4. To help students learn how to manage their emotions and balance them.
  5. To make student efficient in social adjustment so that he/she can adjust him/herself according to the changing social situations.
  6. To develop interpersonal skills, which will help students express their opinions to others and understand others opinions as well.    
  7. To help students develop scientific outlook and problem solving skills.
